Gold Discovered in Colorado! That’s the news that brought the flood of dreamers to the mining camps of the mountains around Breckenridge, in 1859.  They planned to become prospectors, and strike it rich.  And just like you, after a long winter’s day in the Colorado high country, they longed for a hot meal, some companionship and entertainment.  So they gathered in a dining hall, or saloon.  

The first structures were tents, but just like our mining camp, they quickly became log cabins as the population grew. In our mining camp dining hall, you will be welcomed by  the warmth of our antique wood stoves.  Waiting for you, on the hand-hewn log tables, will be yummy hot cocoa to warm you up.  

The Gold Fever of frontier mountain towns attracted all kinds of people.  While you wait for your dinner to be prepared on our wood stove and grill, you will be entertained by one of the colorful Colorado characters that lived in this area in the days of the past. It might be a trapper, aka a mountain man, who roamed around here long before the gold boom.  Or it could be a dance hall girl; one of the few females that came to the mountains to entertain the many young men, lonely for their sweethearts back home.  

These characters  will take you back to the rip-roaring days with their humorous stories.Enjoy a camp style hearty 3 course dinner on tin plates, and beverages in tin cups like the miners had.  

The meal consists of your choice of a grilled steak, BBQ chicken or fish (vegetarian and vegan option also available upon request). Add to this a fresh tossed salad, guest favorite chili, hearty miner’s beans, corn on the cob, dinner rolls and plenty more.  All this is finished off with our famous hot apple pie.  

During this meal you will have the chance to swap your own mountain adventure stories with the folks sitting around you who may have come from around the country, or around the world.  Oh and don’t forget to save enough room in your tummy for marshmallows by a Real Rocky Mountain Campfire. You will never forget this evening when you became part of the history of the Colorado mining camps.

Hot Cocoa Scenic Sleigh Ride

An evening sleigh ride through the Colorado backcountry awaits you at Golden Horseshoe Tours.  Take a drive up the Swan River Valley on Tiger Road outside of Breckenridge, to our meeting point for our scenic sleigh rides.  The two gentle giants, our Belgian draft horses,  are harnessed and ready to pull the cherry-red sleigh that will hold two or twenty.  Once you are nestled under your cozy blankets, the driver will guide your sleigh through trails of powdery snow in the White River National Forest.  The views are postcard-perfect during the day.

With beautiful skies and mountain peak views, a hot cocoa ride is a chance to experience a more leisurely high country winter activity.  You may have the sleigh to yourselves, or it may be shared by others looking for a unique ski country experience.  Your ride will make a brief stop at the scenic overlook so you can see views of the historic Swan River Valley and imagine the gold mining activity of the past.  After their short rest, the horses will shake their heads to jingle the authentic sleigh bells and let you know they are ready to continue your trip, and return to the lodge and back to modern times, where a cup of hot cocoa awaits your group. If you can’t join us for our longer evening dinner rides, a scenic sleigh ride is a great alternative and a wonderful memory to add to your Breckenridge vacation.

Private Romantic Sleigh Ride

Our private romantic sleigh ride for up to 4 adults and small children that can fit on your lap is the perfect way to propose, celebrate an anniversary, have an intimate wedding or just snuggle up with those close to you. Imagine yourself and your beloved gliding through an enchanted, snow covered forest in our majestic one-horse open sleigh. You are laughing or chatting, or singing “Jingle Bells” as you take in the wonderful mountain surroundings of the White River National Forest.

Please note the weight capacity and unfortunately due to COVID we can no longer do anyone sitting up front with driver. Therefor we can accommodate 4 adults, or 3 adults and 2 very small children.

A Private Ride on the Big Red Sleigh
from $70

Travel out into the forest on your own large Santa Sleigh, sleigh can hold up to 10. Book this sleigh for your larger family groups. The Big Sleigh takes the 30 minute cocoa ride route but the sleigh is all yours during that time.
