Big Snow High Water

It was an impressive season whats it mean for summer?

High water and what it means for the upcoming rafting season

What a winter am I right? As I sit here in Denver a look at my window just to see the latest round of snow I can't but wonder when it will end. Inevitably, it will stop soon enough. Mother nature has left its imprint and you'll probably see it on the mountains well into August. After previous years of mediocre water, rafting businesses are gearing up and beginning to run their trips looking towards an absolute ROCKING season. Browns Canyon, Pumphouse, Clear Creek, numbers, pine creek, and the Blue River are all running or about to be opened up and the season is expected to run well into September. The Arkansas River is the most popular river in the US and it's looking at 30% about average going into this summer. Generally, a normal rafting season will see fluctuating flows that will run in comparison to the snowmelt. Meaning warm weather, high runoff, and this spring has been wet so this entire month has been nothing but adding to the high water.

One of the consequences of this high water is obviously the safety of it how businesses will manage the upcoming season. The Adventure Company makes adjustments at higher flows to help manage the risk of faster water always associated with the higher flows. Our familiarity with the Colorado rivers enables us to make appropriate adjustments to help manage the risk. I think one of my top trips coming into this summer is going to be the Browns Canyon 3/4 day with the ultimate Fajita Feast hot lunch before or after you finish up your trip.
