A Time in Maine

Hello All,

I wanted to write a bit about my recent trip to Maine/Boston! I am originally from Maine but have been living in CO for the past 8 years. As much as I love the scenic beauty of Colorado that includes its massive mountains, fresh rivers, and all the other great pieces that envelop Colorado, I still have a lot of space in my heart tied within Maine. It's for obvious reasons as I grew up there but Maine also holds a certain beauty that isn't easily found across our country. Maine is desolate, Massachusetts tourists flock to southern Maine as it is within 2 hours of Boston but many parts of Maine go unnoticed. Maine has an old timey way about it that can really only be described if you visit. Maine is a surprisingly big state but less than a quarter of it is actually populated. Maine is known for its woods, long coast, seafood and for being the state that the sun first rises in. Maine is home for many reasons so I'd like to explain a bit about them! I grew up in Naples, ME which is inland from the coast about 1 hour. Naples is the center of the Lakes Region which includes a few other small towns but Naples is certainly where most the action is going on. If you couldn't guess by the name, the Lakes Region sits along TONS of lakes and has a super cool causeway that runs between two lakes and is home to a few restaurants, bars, and small local shops. 

One of my favorite shops has to be SunSports+ Maine This is a locally owned wake/retail shop that certainly has something for everyone! You can rent gear, take a lesson in any water sport you'd like, shop a great selection of clothing, jewelry, knick knacks, shades, really anything! The shop has been around for 27 years and provided me with a killer wake surfing experience. The owners Harry and Kirsten are smart, fun and you can tell how passionate they are about what they do and the service they provide to the tourists of Naples. Another gem on this stretch of causeway is the restaurant Brother Fleckers Which is located almost directly across the road sitting, literally, right on the lake - Pretty sure the patio is overhanging the water. It’s a truly beautiful spot that is also locally owned and the lobster roll is just something out of this world. Another activity I would recommend doing is hitting up RAD Jet Ski Rentals where you can rent a jet ski for a few hours at a very reasonable rate and get out to explore the lake! What’s nice about jet skis is that they are fairly easy to drive but you do need to always follow boater rules and give each other plenty of room. Jet skis are zippy and can get into other places sometimes boats just can't (not that i'm recommending that) but it's a really fun way to hit the lake. Should you have more people in your party than I would recommend trying out a rental boat from Causeway Marina, Naples, METhis marina has a great location with a super friendly staff and they have numerous options for the kind of boat that you would like to rent.

All in all Maine was a total success, I saw old friends, family, and was able to enjoy a bit of down time in the Maine wilderness. Fun fact: Maine is really buggy! It gets humid but the bugs can definitely take a hike, then again, I did grow up here so they have always been around it's mainly a factor of all the water surrounding the area. After Maine I decided to make my way to Massachusetts where my family is from. My family is originally from Dedham, MA which is actually home to the oldest wood free standing structure in the entire US. Boston is obviously a very very old city so it’s not surprising to hear of this home being located not far. The home is called The Fairbanks House and it as constructed in 1637! Holy right?! It looks like its about that old as well. That even I had dinner with some family/friends and then made my way to Westport, MA which sits in nestled coastal fishing town near Cape Cod, just without the traffic. All in all, New England was great, it was a great experience being back and immersing in the culture. Did fly Spirit Airlines home. That’s another story though ;)
